What are product variations

A product variation is a set of specific product options. You can imagine product options and product variations this way:

Options: red color, black color, white color, size S, size M, size L, etc.

Variations: red S-sized product, black L-sized product, etc.

Product variations are especially useful if your products have multiple options, e.g., size, color, material, and so on. Product variations allow you to:

  • Add different images for every product variation (frequently used for apparel and shoes).

  • Specify different prices and/or discounts for each variation.

  • Track inventory with unique SKU numbers to prevent overselling.

  • Assign a UPC number.

  • Specify the product's weight and size (length, width, height) to get more precise shipping rates at checkout.

  • Specify if the shipping is required,

Let's say you're selling a T-shirt that comes in two sizes (small and medium) and two colors (yellow and gray), meaning it has four variants in total.

When variations are enabled and correctly set up, any time a customer selects a variation for a product in your store, the product price and image are updated automatically.

Adding product variations

Each product can have an unlimited number of options and variations.

1. From your store manager, go to Catalog → Products and create a new product or choose an existing product that comes with different options.

2. To create variations, you first need to create product options. In the Options tab, click Add New Option and use Drop-down Menu, Radio Buttons, or Size input types, so you can further create variations.

3. Click Add New Value to add values to every option: e.g., Yellow and Grey for the color option; S and M for the size. If your product has only one option (e.g., size), but this option has more than one value (e.g., XS, S, M, L, XL), you can also create variations for it. This way, every option value will become a separate variation that can have its own image, weight, SKU, etc.

4. Switch to the Variations tab, and click New Variation.

5. Select the values of options for this variation. In our example, it's the values of size and color. You can also set an individual image, SKU, weight, size (length, width, height), UPS number, price and/or discount. Click Manage to set the stock of the product variant. Once the variation is ready, click Ok in the upper bar of the window.

6. Repeat the steps for all the necessary variations.

7. Finally, in the general product settings, set the stock of the base product to Unlimited and save the changes.

That's it! Now your customers can choose from options and see corresponding pictures and prices while browsing. This is how variations look in the storefront:
