Note: The below-given information is relevant for merchants with Online Store and Advanced Store plans. If you have a Business plan, take a look here 💡

Products are the physical goods, digital files, or services that you sell. To create a product, you need to specify the name and upload product images. In addition, you can add product details that help your clients better understand the product: add available sizes, SKU, description, etc. You don't have to provide every detail for each product.

To view and edit product details, in your store manager go to Catalog → Products.

The quality of your product images directly affects your ability to generate sales. Here are some tips:

  • Make sure all product images are of similar size and style.

  • Use high-quality images, so customers can see any fine details.

  • Show the various perspectives of the product such as front, side, underneath, close-up, etc., so customers can see what they are buying in detail.

Name and description

The name is a title for your product. When you name a product, you should automatically make customers think about the most valuable components of your product, and what they can get when they buy from you.

The description gives general information about your product. It emphasizes its advantages, lists its characteristics, or highlights product features. You may also use videos, images, and animated elements that help to describe your product. Write unique product descriptions, so they rank higher in search engines.

The product description section has the WYSIWYG editor, so you can easily add text (and change its color, size, and font), bullet points, paragraphs, links, images, videos, etc.

Tips to improve your product descriptions:

  • Avoid long sentences and complex vocabulary. Imagine you are explaining the product to a 10-year-old child.

  • Include product demo videos. Just watching a person hold, touch, and interact with the product while explaining its pros and cons is the next best thing to visiting a store.

  • Provide a short and long version of your description. Some people scan rather than read, and some like to read more in-depth about your product. Make sure you cover both types.

The price is what you're charging for the product. The arrow on the right allows you to set up more pricing options for your product, for example:

  • "Compare to" price

  • Bulk discount pricing

  • "Pay what you want" pricing

  • Sell as a subscription – available with Advanced Store plans

"Compare to" price shows the sale price compared to the original price. When you enter a 'compare to' price, the product displays a sale price.

Compare to price

Bulk discount pricing refers to the tiered pricing for each product based on quantity. Discounts are applied immediately as soon as the quantity added to the cart changes. For example, a product costs $44, but if you buy five items, the price will be $40 each.

Bulk discount

"Pay what you want" pricing lets your customers name their own prices for products in your store. This option allows you to be flexible in what price you are willing to accept for selected products. You can suggest one or several prices to your customers, or you can give customers the freedom to define the price themselves. You can use this option to accept donations.

Sell as subscription allows you to charge customers on a repeated schedule for products and services. The billing cycle can be set to daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually. With recurring subscriptions, you can sell food, daily products, cosmetics, subscription boxes, access to membership, accept regular donations, and more. You need Stripe payment method to set up recurring subscriptions. Learn more about it here.

Here are the main parameters for shipping and delivery:

  • Requires shipping or pickup – this setting shows whether a product needs to be shipped. Uncheck it for digital products or services, or for products that you never ship.

  • Weight – that's the product's actual weight. Enter the exact product’s weight for calculating the correct automatic shipping rates. Specify the product's weight and dimensions to obtain precise carrier-calculated shipping rates for your customers in the Shipping & Pickup tab on a product details page.

  • Shipping rates – specified shipping rates for this particular product. Use one of four offered options to set an individual shipping strategy.

Below are the main parameters for inventory management:

  • SKU (stock keeping unit) – the code that identifies the product within your business. You can use the product identification code provided by manufacturers or your own combinations of letters and numbers. Each SKU needs to be unique. If you leave the SKU field empty, the SKU will be automatically generated.

  • Availability – product availability can be enabled/disabled for each product anytime. If you disable a product, your store visitors can’t view/see it in your storefront.

  • Stock control – use the stock control section to specify the number of products in stock and set up low stock notifications.

  • Quantity – the number of items in stock.

Attributes let you specify product identifiers, which you may need for accounting, inventory, or other purposes. For example, books are typically distinguished by ISBN, author, publisher, cover type, language. Apparel can be characterized by brand, season, material, etc. You can add this information in attributes.

With the help of attributes, you can also keep some private details that you don’t want to share with your customers (e.g., net cost).

If you use unique identifiers such as UPC, EAN, and ISBN numbers, you can use the barcode scanner in the store iOS mobile app for managing your products. You can scan the code right on your product to find the same item in the catalog or add codes to any existing product.

Options and variations

Options – if you sell products that have variants like colors and sizes, you can list them as one base product with options. With the help of product options, you can also offer extras (like gift wrapping) or ask buyers to upload a file for the ordered product/service. Learn more about product options here.

Variations – product variations can help you assign different images for every product option in your store. It also allows tracking the stock of options like sizes. If your products come in different colors or materials, make sure you have images for every version. Learn more about product variations here.

Digital files

The Files tab lets you upload files, so you could sell eBooks, videos, music, digital art, and any other digital stuff. When files are uploaded, they are instantly and securely delivered to buyers upon purchase. Learn more about it here.

These settings allow you to set specific SEO-related information on your product's page. When analyzing a webpage, search engines get information about its content from the so-called “meta tags”. This includes the page title and meta description. Search engines use meta tags to describe pages as they appear in the search results and rank them by relevance.

There is automatically generated metadata based on your product's name and its description. Search engines display a limited number of characters, so you may want to re-write the page title and meta description. Edit page title and descriptions with relevant keywords so your product appears higher in search engine results.

Page title – the title is shown as a clickable link in search results. You can customize the title to target your clients’ interests more accurately.

Meta description – a short sentence summarizing the content of the product. Write a more detailed text describing your product offer. Meta descriptions can be any length, but Google generally truncates snippets to ~155–160 characters.

Related products

Using the Related Products section will display the You may also like section in your online store. It also allows cross-selling products in the cart. You can manually select specific recommended products or show random products, as well as a combination of the first two options. Learn more about it here.

Categories are groups/collections of products that a product is included in. The product must be assigned to at least one category. If you don't assign a product to any category, it will be automatically added to the default Storefront page category. One product may belong to several categories. Categories help customers to faster navigate through the store and find the products they need. Learn more about it here.

How to remove decimals from product prices?

In your store manager, go to Settings → General → Regional Settings → Currency and enable the Hide trailing zeros in fractional part option.

This removes the left digit from your prices if they show a zero ($40.00 → $40). If a product price or an order total has a decimal that is not zero (e.g. $40.95), we will show the decimal to reflect the exact cost for customers.

Note: The fractional part is removed automatically if your currency doesn't use decimals. For example, prices will never include decimals if the currency is set to the Japanese Yen.

How to know when my products are low or out of stock?

The store will send you a message about the low stock of a product if you enable this option for the product. Notifications will never be sent for products listed with an unlimited quantity.

Can I set the weight for ounces?

Yes. Convert the weight in ounces to a decimal ratio for pounds. Each ounce is 0.06 pounds. Be sure to use a zero before the decimal. Edit product weight in your store manager's Settings → General → Regional Settings → Weight & Size.

How to add a video to a product description?

1. Upload your video file to YouTube or Vimeo.

2. Copy the link (address from the browser) of the uploaded video.

3. From your store admin, go to Catalog → Products. Create a new or open an existing product.

5. Paste the link in the Description.

6. Save changes. The video will appear in your product description.
