Portfolio websites are among the simplest websites to create, and it's even easier with Zyro! In this article, you will learn the basics of building a portfolio website 👩🏻‍🎨

As mentioned in the video above, a professional portfolio should have three key pages:

  1. Projects, to showcase your work.

  2. About, to tell your story.

  3. Contacts, to let people easily reach you.

Besides the above-mentioned, you can also add more pages, for example, a blog to write about your insights or experiences.

  1. Choose a template based on your needs

  2. Figure out the structure of your portfolio

  3. Customize the website template

    1. Portfolio page

    2. About page

    3. Contact page

  4. Publish it!

1. Choose a template based on your needs

To begin with, you need to choose a website template. There are plenty of options:

  • Use a professionally pre-designed website template and personalize it to reflect yourself.

    • You can choose from various categories: Portfolio, Resume, Fashion, Photography, etc.

    • You can even pick a template from a less relevant category (e.g., eCommerce). You'll be able to easily remove unnecessary content and add your own, as all templates are fully customizable.

  • Use an experimental template that gives more freedom, i.e., doesn't require sticking to the grid.

  • Use a blank template and build your portfolio from scratch.

2. Figure out the structure of your portfolio

Basically, a website consists of pages that consist of sections that include specific elements.

Once you've selected a website template for your portfolio, check the following:

  • How many pages are there? Would you like to add or remove any pages? To add, remove, or hide website pages from the website menu, refer to this guide: How to manage a website's menu bar

  • Check what sections the pages consist of. Would you like to add, remove or edit any sections? For more information, take a look here: What are website sections?

  • Check what website elements are there. Would you like to add, remove, or edit any elements? To learn more, refer here: What are website elements?

3. Customize the website template

Once you've decided on your website's structure, focus on perfecting the three main pages of your portfolio:

Portfolio page

Presentation of your projects is the core of your portfolio. Depending on how much work and examples you want to share, you may:

Show all your work on a single page

If you have several categories or collections, you may distribute them in separate sections. Remember that you can also link to sections, i.e., each section can have an anchor to link to. If you link to a below section, it creates a scrolling effect and takes you down upon a single button click. Example portfolio 🎨

Show each individual project on a dedicated page

If you have several categories or collections of your work, you would probably not want to showcase all your work on a single page making it crowded and clumsy. If you have several collections or categories, feel free to expose them on separate pages. Example portfolio 📸

Show each individual project on a dedicated page and then put all those pages in a dropdown menu

If you have an extensive portfolio, let's say more than three dedicated category/collection pages, you may assign them to a dropdown menu. A single dropdown menu can include an unlimited number of pages or links. Example portfolio 🏂

About page

The about page is your short bio. To keep the information in a neat way, you may introduce yourself by splitting it into sections, for example:

  1. Add a text section and write a paragraph or two about who or what you are. Learn how to change text style 💡

  2. Insert a section for images, gallery, or Instagram feed and show some visuals of yourself.

  3. Share an inspirational quote, or a list of your favorite readings, music, or destinations.

  4. Add links to your social media channels.

Contact page

Keep the contact page short and sweet since its purpose is only informative. You can add such elements as:

4. Publish it!

Once your portfolio is ready, publish it and get ready for your online success! 🚀
